Hundreds are feared dead after a major landslide hit northern Papua New Guinea early on Friday, destroying at least seven villages in a remote mountainous area.\r\nFootage from the scene shows one village completely buried under debris, with only the top of a building or two still visible. The landslide, which occurred in the remote Rai Coast district of Madang province, is believed to have been triggered by heavy rains.\r\nThe full extent of the damage is still unknown, but local officials fear that hundreds of people may have been killed. Rescue efforts are underway, but are being hampered by the remoteness of the area and the difficult terrain.\r\nโWe have reports of a very tragic situation up there,โ said Madang Governor Peter Yama. โThe landslide has caused widespread damage and we believe that there are many people who are still missing.โ\r\nYama said that the landslide had cut off access to the affected area, making it difficult for rescue workers to reach the scene. He added that the Papua New Guinea Defence Force had been called in to assist with the rescue effort.\r\nLandslides are common in Papua New Guinea, a mountainous country located in the Pacific Oceanโs โRing of Fire,โ a zone of seismic activity. In 2014, a massive landslide killed at least 25 people in the Southern Highlands province.
